ORLANDOViols @ Bühne im Netz

ORLANDOViols performing “ROYAL CORONATION CONSORT”

@ “BÜHNE IM NETZ" powered by STREAMING – ARTS”

In cooperation with the partners „Kultur vor Ort“, [ps] promotion and the project office Streaming – Arts, the extraordinary concert event "ROYAL CORONATION CONSORT" will take place on Wednesday, 23.06.2021; 20:15 h as part of the project "Bühne im Netz" with the ensemble "ORLANDOviols". Further videos of the project "Bühne im Netz" can be found here.

Viola da gamba: Hille Perl, Júlia Vető, Claas Harders, Giso Grimm, English theorbo, cisther, bandora: Lee Santana, Simon Linné.

The international ensemble ORLANDOviols, rooted in the Bremen area, will play a concert that is special in many respects: due to the Covid19 restrictions, the ensemble will not play in one place, but digitally networked, from five different locations spread across Europe.

This format is made possible by the "ovbox" (https://github.com/gisogrimm/ovbox), which the ensemble developed especially for this purpose. The ensemble is connected by a low-delay audio signal transmission via the internet. The spatialised audio of the ovbox, also called 3D audio, enables spatial listening in CD quality. This makes new formats for online performances (https://youtu.be/p_GSfDVmFfg) possible.

But this concert is not only special from a technical point of view. The two composers of the evening, William Lawes and Matthew Locke, were both considered very progressive composers of their time. The unrest at the time of the English Civil War, in which Lawes also lost his life, is reflected in dissonances and sometimes unusual sounds.

The ensemble ORLANDOviols has set itself the goal of performing music of the 16th and 17th centuries anew in the context of our present. The focus is on a careful examination of the historical sources. Historical performance practice is complemented by an experimental approach to new technologies and concert formats.
